From Kate (A, Caroline): Mary Linehan (our eldest daughter) lives in Jakarta but she went to Kathmandu where she had previously lived and where she and Mark (her new husband met). I am forwarding the description of the wedding she sent today [May 2, 1999].

Dear Mom and Dad, Steve and Mary,

We are back from the trek. It was terrific; we walked four days up to Dengboche and spent 2 nights there-just one day on from Tengboche Monastery, where Jangbu took Dad et al 4 years ago. There is no flight from Syangboche anymore, so we walked down to Lukla, for 8 days total.

We got married on April 25 at 6am, complete with an hour of chanting and praying and a blessing from the Incarnate Sherpa Lama, Nawang Tenzing Jangbu Lama. Mark brought a gift of huge seashell (one of the 8 auspicious signs) from Indonesia and it was placed on the table in front of the big Buddha. They blew the big horns and then we took some pictures with the monks. By mid-morning it was over and we walked up the valley to Dengboche-5 hours up the valley toward Everest, Nuptse and Lotse. Beautiful.

The walk back down was great-lots of mountain sheep, a musk deer and beautiful birds, including the Danfe (imperial pheasant and national bird). The rhododendrons are in full bloom an the whether was clear and sunny. Our RNAC flight was cancelled yesterday morning, but Jangbu got us on the helicopter. He is still the best guide in Nepal and made sure we performed our part of the wedding ceremony properly.

Our friend Leah came from Singapore, she and Mark are out shopping now. Last night was Buddha's birthday and the full moon, so we went to hear some classical Nepali music near Pashupatinath. Dad would have loved it. Then came the rain, the best thing possible-they have not seen any for 6 months and the dryness is extreme. Tonight we have a celebration planned at the Stupa View in Boudhanath-I am sure we went there for lunch or momos and to look over the stupa. Ram and Jangbu, Judy and Brian, Peace Corps friends of Mark and my carpet lady, Chozin, will all be there. We will be thinking of you.

Tomorrow we go to Singapore and then back to JKT. I will write when we get home. We will be seeing you in May & June as planned.

Love, Mary
