According to the information provided by Neil Abelsma, at the Marine Corps Air-Ground Museum, these are Overseas Service and Wound chevrons. "The overseas chevron was worn point down above the left cuff, while the wound chevron was worn point down above the right cuff". Neil's information was provided at the behest of Jack - Peter. (I had previously misconstrued these as Corporal's stripes.)
